The character first appeared in two novels published at the beginning of the 20th century and in a Japanese-German animated series (anime) produced between 1975 and 1980. The animated film adaptation was created by the Japanese studio Zuiyo Enterprise as the anime Mitsubachi Maya no Boken in two seasons with 52 episodes each, directed by Hiroshi Saito. In 2013, a 3D series was broadcast on German television, retelling the story of the unique little bee in a new visual style.

Maja happily explores the world with her best friends, the young bee Willi and the grasshopper Flip, experiencing new adventures every day on her journeys of discovery through nature. Maja has also flown across the big screen with three feature films.
